Here's to the crazy ones, the ones who change the world. The painters who recolor it. The scientists who redefine it. The innovators who take "It can't be done" as their starting point. They make computers in garages, turn moldy bread into medicine, and take the bus seats that were denied to them. They smash barriers because they are convinced that something better exists on the other side. When the pluses outweigh the minuses, they take the calculated risk.
Calculated Risk doesn't settle for mediocre. We are selecting varietals from the most exclusive appellations in Napa Valley. Occasionally we will locate a unique Vineyard outside of Napa Valley to add to the collection.
Keeping with the tradition of those that have changed the world around us, we also strive to over deliver quality with attractive value. Our current offerings change rapidly. Napa Valley fine wines.
Although they are located just a few miles west of Hwy 29 between Napa and Oakville, the stoic vineyards planted on the slopes of the Mount Veeder appellation are generally hidden from public view by the dense forest cascading down the Mayacamas Range. This unique setting allows the fruit to ripen slowly with a steady flow of warm sun during the day and cool mountain breezes in the late afternoon. When you throw in the facts that the soils are lean, rugged and rocky; at harvest, the end result are small grape clusters packed with concentrated flavors and true hillside character that set them apart from those grown on the valley floor.
The latest example is the new release of the Calculated Risk. With a dark red hue, this 2014 Mount Veeder Red opens up with dense aromas of wild berries, blue fruits and more subtle hints of licorice, wild herbs, mineral, and cedar. From the glass, the palate is caressed with ripe and tangy flavors of briary blackberry, boysenberry, blueberry tart, cassis, fresh sage, and savory spices leading to a long, persistent finish. Pure mountain swagger in every sip.
Suggested Food Pairings: Hard cheeses, risotto with wild mushrooms, seared Ahi tuna with espresso rub, Beef Wellington, rack of lamb, and chocolate truffles.

Calculated Risk 2015 Red Wine, Napa Valley
In Napa Valley, each harvest comes with its own level of risks and rewards. An excellent example is the 2015 vintage, which will be remembered for producing a myriad of high quality wines that were limited in volume due to lack of rain earlier in the year. As a result, the relatively small size of the harvest gave talented winemaker Dwight Bonewell more time to select the best barrel lots he used to craft this expressive new Bordeaux-style release from Calculated Risk.
In contrast to the Cabernet Franc-dominated blend from the 2014 vintage; this stylish new gem is composed of 72% Merlot, 18% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Cabernet Franc. With an alluring dark garnet hue, the wine features attractive aromas of ripe red fruits, wild berries, black fig and fresh sage are layered with subtle nuances of spice and toasted nuts. As the wine opens up in the glass, the gracious flavors of dark cherry, ripe plum, blackberry, raspberry coolie, white pepper and bittersweet chocolate are balanced with a smooth texture, silky tannins, bright acidity, and a rewarding finish that makes every sip count. Elegant, complex and drinkable when young, this is an outstanding wine that over-delivers for the price.
Food pairing suggestions: Rich and tangy cheeses, risotto with wild mushrooms, Black Forest Ham, lamb sliders, grilled tri-tip, and savory stews.
